What’s a Diploma Worth?

A recent report from the Youth Service Bureau in conjunction with the US Department of Labor states the importance of a HS diploma.  Here are several reasons why it is important to finish high school and earn a diploma.  Only 15% of today’s jobs are for the unskilled but even those employers hire educated adults first.  High school dropouts have 42% less buying power or credit than there educated peers.  The military only accepts a GED if a student scores extremely high on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test.  A college diploma garners an earning rate of over 89% more than a high school diploma which earns more than 68% than a GED.  A high school dropout will earn approximately $350,000 less than a high school graduate.  In common sense terminology…it’s worth having!

Hanna Huff and Derik Arellano will be headed to Austin this week…Why you ask?  Well they have qualified for the University Interscholastic League State Academic competition in Journalism.  Hanna placed 2nd in Editorial Writing and Derik placed 1st in Feature Writing.  The two also combined for enough points to win the Regional Champion Journalism Team Award.  Pam McClellan, Journalism sponsor along with SFHS UIL Director Carol Stovall, will accompany Hanna and Derik to Austin.  “This is Hanna’s second trip to state and Derik’s first” said McClellan.  “I am very excited for them; they both have a great opportunity to bring home a gold medal”.  The group will be flying to Austin on Thursday and return on Saturday.  SFISD wishes Hanna and Derik the best of luck.  Win STATE!!!
